Program Description

The Commercial Change of Use Grant Program is designed to help offset the cost to renovate a building for commercial use in accordance with Virginia State Building Code regulations. As buildings change uses over time, the Virginia State Building Code requires that structures also must meet code requirements for each new use. This grant can be used to renovate applicable commercial and residential properties if the new use of the building differs from the most recent use according to State Building Code. The Change of Use Grant can be used for the following to update a building for a new use:

  • Architecture/ Engineering
  • Structural Compliance
  • Fire Flow Compliance
  • Handicap Accessibility
  • Landscaping
  • Parking Requirements
  • Off-site Roadway Improvements

Steps to Apply

  1. Review the Change of Use Grant Guidelines (PDF) document for an overview of the grant program and eligible uses.
  2. Contact Vinton staff to schedule a meeting with Economic Development and Planning & Zoning staff to determine scope of project and eligibility.
    • NOTICE: Applicants must have proposed Change of Use improvements approved by Town of Vinton Staff BEFORE works begins in order to receive grant reimbursement.
  3. Complete and return the Change of Use Grant Application Packet (PDF) to:

  4. Applicants will receive a letter for their grant award determination.
